Community Swim Program

SPLISH SPLASH!!!

Yesterday we had our first swimming lesson at the Manurewa Pools. We got to take the community bus down from school. Our lesson was in the small teaching pool inside, we had to do an assessment to find out which groups we were in out of 1,2 or 3. We got spilt up into our groups and taught different things like floating on our stomachs and backs, kicking and starting to use our arms.

We had so much fun all together in the pool learning new things!

Every week on Tuesday morning at 10am (except Tuesday 5th August) we will be going to the pools to have another lesson on swimming and water safety. We cant wait to see how much we have improved by the end!

Here are a few snaps and videos from our first lesson!

Our Animal Houses

After the zoo the Champion Kids have been learning about the animal's we saw, so we thought that we might make some house's for them and this is what they look like.

First we got some cardboard boxes and started putting little bits of paper and crafts into them to create the insides of the houses, they looked awesome. Then we thought 'how are we going to make it even better' so we  decided to use the dye to help colour them and make them more interesting for the animals to live in.

Here are some photos of our houses during and after the process.

Kids Can Cook

We were very lucky to be able to have a man come into our school and show us a few things that we can cook at home to help! We went to the school garden and picked some herbs and then we made silver beet and apple crepes. Most of us didn't like them but it was funny watching him make them and the faces people pulled while they ate them.

Here are a few photos

The High Flyers Zoo Trip

One sunny day the High Flyers went to the Auckland zoo. There were 5 classes that went to the zoo. First we saw Miss Rayner, she introduced us to the zoo educators and talked about the rules and what we would be doing. Then a zoo educator took us to his teaching area where he talked about reptiles like the tuatara, skink and he showed us a dead python snake skin. When he finished talking we went into a dark house where they all lived and we tried to find them, they had camouflage to help them hide from predators. Next another zoo educator called Miss Rayner took us to go and see the native bird called the Kea. Miss Rayner also showed us some bones of a native bird.  After that we went to see the Kereru with a man, the kereru was so cute it's body colour was green like a kakapo. We learnt heaps about the Kereru. The next native animal we went to see was the Kiwi, we had to listen to the information about the kiwi and we had to be very quiet because the kiwi  don't like lots of noise. We found out that when we sleep at night time the kiwi wake up and search for food. This is called being 'nocturnal.' When we came out of the dark night house we saw a big glass pool with rocks around it, this is where we found out about the Eels. Did you know that these eels swim to Tonga to have their babies, then the babies swim back to live in New Zealand. Later we had our morning-tea. All of the high flyers ate their morning tea together around the rocks. Once we all finished our morning-tea we went to our teacher to find out where we were going next. For the rest of the time went spilt up into groups and went exploring the rest of the zoo. Some of us went to the safari and grasslands area to see the giraffes, zebras, the white rhino, the elephant and the hippopotamus. They are such big funny looking animals. Some  of us went to see the monkeys who were making lots of noise because they were excited about having lots of people around.  We saw the seals from under the water, they were so graceful and kept swimming past us! We had so much fun at the zoo exploring all the different enclosures and looking at the animals habitats. Thanks alot to all those who helped make it possible! Here are some of our photos.
